The geothermal vents in West Virginia are pockets of heat moving towards or near the surface. They are generated from the Earth’s core and could provide enough energy to break West Virginia’s dependence on a diminishing coal supply. They can provide as much if not more energy as West Virginia currently uses for coal and would be sustainable.
The source of the geothermal anomaly in West Virginia has nothing whatever to do with the earth’s core. The heat source is not clearly understood, but whatever it is, the origin is somewhere in the upper crust, not the core.
