Genetically modified foods or GMOs are are food stocks, crops or animals, who have been chemically and biologically engineered to produce a “better” or modified food product. It can be anything from increased efficiency in plant breeding to hormones in cattle. It can produce a more bountiful yield for food production but also introduces chemicals and pesticides into the food chain that would not normally be there.
Some of the foods we eat the most in America are usually genetically modified, including corn, soybeans, canola, and cottonseed oil. They modifications increase their vitamins or help them resist diseases. Many Hawaiian papayas on the market were engineered to avoid a certain ringspot virus. Similarly, about 14% of squash on the market were modified to resist certain viruses.
