What are gas hydrates used for?

Methane gas hydrates are a potential source of energy, and is found as a solid underneath sediments in the ocean floor.  As organisms decompose at the bottom of the ocean and are covered with sediemtns, methane gas hydrates form.  This energy is definitely not a clean energy, and danger to ocean dwellers would ensue if the methane gas hydrates were harvested.
