What are the fuel economy standards of today?

In April the Obama administration changed the fuel economy standards.  They would like a 35.5 mile per gallon average in six years.  Some auto makers will be striving for a 34.1 mile per gallon average.

This will add an extra $434 per vehicle for the 2012 year vehicle models.  By 2016 the cost will be an extra $926.  But, the Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency says this program will save the average person an extra $3,000  a year by the lower gas mileage.
