The oldest subway would be the London Underground, started in 1863. The runners up would be the NYC Subway (1870), Chicago’s L (1892), Budapest’s Metro (1896) and the Glasgow Subway (1896). Several of these systems, such as Chicago’s ‘L’ are not predominantly underground, but have portions of lines which are in tunnels.
