In the Pacific Islands, the natural environment is being affected by:

    1. Pullition causes algal blooms and hypoxic zones and also alters the food web and causing disease in many species.
    2. Overfishing for recreational, subsistence and commercial uses
    3. Habitat destruction along the coast, including see grasses, marshes, corals and mangroves, and in forests, where the wood is harvested for the tropical timber and building market, and then the land is used for subsistence agriculture
    4. Invasive species are leading to the depletation of native wildlife
    5. Climate change is leading to higher sea temperatures and decreasing pH levels, both of which have detrimental effects on marine life. It is also causing rising sea levels, which threaten life on the islands as well.
