Eyes like all other parts of the body are made of cells that have specialized for various functions. The eye is actually a composite of many different kinds of cells working together to transform light into images that can be interpreted by the brain, from the lens cells that bend the light to the retina the senses it and finally the nerve cells that transmit the information. The eyeball itself, i.e. the white part, is called the sclera which is a fibrous protective layer of cells.
