An extended-range electric vehicle has an internal combustion engine that is used to power a generator when the batteries are running low.
An example of an extended range EV that is generating a lot of buzz is Chevrolet’s new Volt. This commuter car, with a scheduled release date later this month, mostly runs on electricity, but has a combustion engine to back up the battery for journeys that would normally run the battery out of power. This is a great consumer option as it offers very little carbon emissions, sky rocketing gas mileage, and gives journey length flexibility not offered by strictly electric models.
