A forest is a balanced ecosystem when not disturbed by human activity. In this example, the system functions as a closed loop, meaning all by-products of one organism’s actions are utilized as fuel energy for another organism’s needs. In addition, plants and trees initiate the carbon cycle through photosynthesis and then pass the energy along to heterotrophs, who again release carbon back to the atmosphere through respiration. In mature forest ecosystems, the carbon cycle is in equilibrium and shows a great example of balance.
