Pollutants in household wastewater that could leak out are nitrogen, phosphorus, and disease-causing bacteria and viruses. If a septic tank is working properly, it is suppose to help cut down on these pollutants. Septic tank leaks can easily contaminate the groundwater causing significant threat to drinking water and human health. Also leaks could spread to surface water posing a threat to any swimmers. This could include eye/ear infections, acute gastrointestinal illness and diseases like hepatitis.
