The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has an article on impacts of the actual pharmaceuticals themselves, post-production, and how they affect the environment, ranging from the unmetabolized drugs in the water supply to empty containers filling landfills.
Through biological run-off they seep back into rivers, lakes and streams where they disrupt the ecosystems and often cause severe affects to the natural flora and fauna of the area. Basically these medications can and are very toxic to the surrounding environment.
