What are the environmental impacts of prisons?

Prisons have similar environmental impact to any other buildings. Prisons require energy to operate. This energy is most often derived from coal which emits global warming-causing CO2. Prison occupants require food and water, which deplete natural resources and also contribute to global warming. However, prisons are probably environmentally friendly overall – if each inmate lived in his own home, they would use more energy and water collectively than at the prison.
