What are the effects of oil spills?

Oil spills have short term effects as well as long term effects.  Short term effects include tarred beaches, death of all sorts of marine life, and contaminated water supplies.  However, in the long term, toxic components of oil spills can remain in the water and surrounding years for many years to come.  They build up in the food chain, starting with the smallest organisims and making their way up the chain.  Oil spills are also extremely hard to clean up, and many of the damages can never be recouped.
