There are a couple disadvantages of using bio gas. One would be the terrible smell; this derives from the fact that a) bio gas is 2/3 methane and b) it is composed of manure and other decomposed organic waste. There is also an issue of pollution, since production of bio gas can increase the amount of ammonia that is evaporated into the atmosphere.
The pros definitely outweigh the cons, though. Bio gas is renewable energy, for one. It is also very green, since it reduces CO2 equivalence and decomposes naturally. Also key is the reduction in the use of fossil fuels that comes from using bio gas instead. So, while bio gas does not suffer from the tragedy of imperfection, it is definitely a better alternative to using coal, oil or natural gas.
