Atlantic salmon are found in the northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into the north Atlantic. They breed in the rivers of Western Europe from Portugal to Norway, Iceland, and Greenland. Unlike the Pacific salmon species, they do not automatically die after spawning, and may recondition themselves to return to the sea to repeat the migration.

There are more than one Pacific Ocean species of salmon. There is the cherry salmon, chinook salmon, chum salmon, coho salmon, pink salmon, and the sockeye salmon. Species of pacific salmon tend to die after spawning.
