Pits created by coal mining, that are abandoned.

It seems as though the phrase was coined by Bret Ligget, blogger for inhabitat.com because I can’t find any other instances of it popping up, so don’t feel bad about not being familiar with the term.  As rigibson said, a dead coal mine is simply a mine which is no longer used and is abandoned by the mining company that used it.
