Using diesel for fracking is known to contaminate drinking water. There was a case in Canada where an aquifer that a landowner got her water from was contaminated by fracking and she was able to demonstrate that she could light her water on fire.
Despite such claims as the above, however, there was a year long probe done in the US on the 19 states that allow fracking, and no cases were found in which the drinking water had been contaminated. However, diesel fuel was the only one that was banned from use in fracking in 2005. That being said, there have been many cases in which diesel has been used, despite the law. The top five states in which diesel was used in fracking from 2005-2009 (again, after the law prohibiting it’s use was enacted) are as follows:
