As with any other industry involving the breeding of animals for commercial purposes, the conditions at ferret farms will vary by facility, where wire cages and controlled lighting are typically the norm. The largest ferret breeding facility in the United States is Marshall Farms of North Rose, New York. Lab Animal magazine has reported that ferrets are raised in indoor pens simulating a laboratory environment. Marshall Farms in particular has been the subject of controversy, especially by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), for separating ferret kits from their mothers too young and for not providing proper vaccinations. However, much of the criticism of large ferret breeders has centered around the larger issue of selling stock for purposes of animal testing as opposed to specific conditions at any given facility.
