What are companies doing to offset their carbon footprint?

In general, companies that say they are offsetting their carbon footprint are buying ‘carbon credits.’ This means that for every unit of CO2 they are producing, they are paying another company to do something to “offset” their CO2. This could be producing renewable energy, planting trees, or something to that effect. Unfortunately, this is often just a method for companies with lots of capital (money) to continue producing lots and lots of CO2, while saying that they are “offsetting” it by paying other people to do things that are environmentally friendly.
