What are cold water upwellings?

    When the surface temperature of ocean water warms, and wind blows the surface water in a new direction, the colder water from below begins to rise.  As the cold water moves up, it carries with it sediments from beneathe.  So cold water upwellings is a term to describe this phenomenon.
