Cold-water fish kill occur when there is not enough oxygen in the water, due to a change in temperature much lower than normal. Sometimes when ice forms over a lake, and snow covers the ice, it will prevent the underwater plants from photosynthesis, and cause the change in oxygen that will kill the fish.
