Coccoliths are plate of calcium carbonate formed by single cell algae. They are found in vesicles within the cell, and when formation is complete, they fuse to the cells wall. The function of coccoliths is unclear, and some believe they may fight against bacteria and viruses, maintaining bouyancy or assisting with photosynthesis.
