Climate pledges are commitments by nations to reduce their total greenhouse gas emissions. Basically, it’s a nation’s leaders saying, “We will cut emissions by ____percentage down to a total of ___ million tons of greenhouse gasses per year.” These pledges are frequently made as bargaining tools, and have come to the forefront because of the Copenhagen conference and the pressure on developed nations to change their ways. Leaders may also be making these self-enforcing pledges to avoid the creation of greenhouse gas limits that are enforced by other countries or a unified governing body.
