Chemical tags, when used in the life sciences, allow different types of cells to be identified and monitored. One of the most often-used tags is green fluorescent protein, which was discovered by Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie, and Roger Y. Tsien. Their discovery earned them the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
