What are carbon trading schemes all about?

The common “cap and trade” is a good example–there is a mandatory total cap on emissions, but also the cap and trade provides sources flexibility in how they adhere to the cap. So, the emission sources can trade emission credits amongst each other to alter how much each emission source contributes to the total emissions cap.
