Carbon nanotubes are basically molecular scale tubes of graphitic carbon with very specific properties. For one, they are extremely stiff and strong fibers and also have very unique characterisitics such as their electronic properties. Especially important is the fact that nanotubes can be metallic or semiconducting depending on their structure. Some nanotubes have conductivities higher than that of copper, while others behave more like silicon.
