Black silicon was made by scientists at Harvard when a hyper-powerful laser was shown onto a piece of silicon. Then sulfur hexafluoride was added to the silicon. The piece of silicon then looks black to the naked eye but actually has microscopic spikes on the surface.
This was a great discovery because black silicon is 100 to 500x more light sensitive and this could revolutionize the night-vision, digital photography, and solar power industries.
