Biofuels are fuels that are derived from dead biological matter. They can be in a solid, liquid, or gas form and are most often derived from plants or plant-derived materials. Biofuels are primarily used to power vehicles and to heat homes. Biofuels are a green alternative to other sources of fuel because they produce energy without releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. There are several types of biofuels:
-First generation: Made from sugar, vegetable oil, or animal fat. -Second generation: Using biomass to liquid technology, including cellulosic biofuels and non-food crops.-Third generation: Made from algae. -Fourth generation: Converts biodiesel to gasoline.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory defines biofuels as renewable energy that comes from biomass that is converted directly into.liquid. The two most common kinds of biofuels are ethanol and biodiesel. Technically, diesel and gasoline are ancient biofuels, but modern biofuels are made from plants that are grown today.
To add to the above answers here are some facts about biofuels: biodiesel is the most common biofuel in Europe, biofuel can replace much petroleum without impacting food supplies and early diesel engines were shown to run on peanut oil.
