Believe it or not, the biggest cash crop in the United States is marijuana. As of 2006, illegal marijuana production in the United States $35.8 billion, exceeding the combined value of corn ($23.3 billion) and wheat ($7.5 billion). The boon to the economy is one of the reasons why the marijuana legalization and regulation issue has heated up in recent years. The tax money and job creation that would result would be huge as well. Marijuana has all ready been objectively established as safer than alcohol, so the discussion rages on.
