What are the benefits of thunderstorms?

Thunderstorms provide 47% of precipitation east of the Rockies, and 70% of precipitation in the Southwestern United States. This makes them critical to the nation’s agricultural economy.

Storms’ lightning helps plants by changing gaseous nitrogen into compounds that the plants need.

On a still larger scale, thunderstorms maintain the “global electrical circuit” by moving electrical charge from the Earth’s atmosphere to the Earth itself.
