Cotton has traditionally been one of the most chemical and energy-intensive crops to grow in the United States. A quarter of the pesticides sprayed on crops in the US are used on cotton fields, along with 10% of the chemical fertilizers. A single cotton T-shirt requires 1/3 of a pound of synthetic chemicals to produce, and many of these chemicals have proved extremely harmful to the environment and to human health. Because ordinary cotton is so chemical intensive, encouraging the organic cotton-growing industry is a great way to reduce synthetic fertilizer and pesticide use, and make our agricultural system more sustainable.
