The bile from black bears in particular (which was listed as a medicine in the world’s first pharmacopoeia in 659 AD) is believed to be a panacea for a number of medical problems ranging from arthritis to poor eyesight. Although there is some medical evidence to support the existence of the curative powers of bear bile, it hardly justifies the illegal poaching of this threatened species.
