Rocks are generally characterized as one of three main types of rock; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. These classifications are based on things like texture, mineral deposits and chemical composition. Igneous rock is formed by cooling magma when it reaches the Earth’s surface. Sedimentary rock is formed from layers of materials being compacted on one another, for example sand stone or limestone. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that are subjected to extreme heat and/or pressure, which changes the chemical composition of the rocks, hence the name. Each are unique and found in different areas around the world.
