Some negative aspects associated with coal are carbon dioxide emissions which are harmful to both human health and the environment. In addition, the particulate matter that is emitted when coal is burned is harmful to the human respiratory system. Furthermore, burning coal can cause sulphur oxide emissions which harm plants and wildlife through the production of acid rain. Another harmful aspect of coal combustion is nitrogen oxide emissions which can cause photochemical smog and the formation of acid rain.
The coal mining process in itself is very harmful to the environment. Specifically, a coal mining process called “mountaintop removal” can cause dangerous pollutants to be emitted into the environment. Mountaintop removal can also lead to deforestation and damage to our ecosystem.
