Ash ponds occur when byproducts mining, usually of coal mining, are mixed with water to create a slurry which is then dumped into a pond called an ash pond.
The companies generally re-use some of the water in the pond, but eventually, the ash pond fills and must be disposed of or another ash pond must be created.
