The reduced dependence that alecsandravelez mentioned is something that many users of open source value. Instead of having to upgrade to new OS systems everytime one comes out in order to continue using products, open source allows users to use whatever version they are currently using. Products are available for all versions, reducing the need to continually purchase whatever a vendor pushes on the user.
