The advantages of building a damn are flood control, diverting water for power and navigation, provide reliable, usable water sources, provides food, and by creating power it prevents over 200 millions tons of co2 in the US. The disadvantages of building a damn are: can have negative effects on fish population (that is happening in CA/OR right now), dams are expensive to build, flooding an area means a natural area gets destroyed, older dams have been known to breach, building damns can lead to geological problems, many people get displaced by building dams, some projects can produce greenhouse gases by flooding areas, the rate of decomposition increases-emitting carbon dioxide and methane.
