Aquaculture is the cultivation of underwater plants and animals in a natural, controlled environment. Basically, agriculture underwater. Wikipedia mentions that it is also known as aquafarming.
Aquaculture is also known as fish farming. Aquaculture can help a family raise good sources of protein or benefit a local economy, but large-scale fish farming can run into the same troubles that large-scale livestock farming (factory farming) bring about. Large numbers of sea creatures may contaminate the water they live in with excrement, and many dead fish might float among the living. Aquaculture can also serve as a means to research the breeding and growth habits of freshwater and marine sea life.
