Antioxidants are nutrients we receive from our food which help fight damage from free-radicals, by-products produced when our body cells use oxygen. The antioxidants work to prevent future damage, and help repair damage that has already occurred. Free radicals can be a contributing factor for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other severe diseases. Another potential benefit of antioxidants is a strengthened immune system which can help additionally protect the body from disease. Some common foods that contain antioxidants are: carrots, broccoli, citrus fruits, nuts and seeds, eggs, tomato, whole grains, spinach, soy, and red wine.
