The Hoover Dam costs several million dollars a year to maintain. However, when hydroelectric turbines were added (the original purpose of the dam was flood control), the dam became self-sustaining, generating enough electricity to pay for not only its yearly maintenance, but to repay the loans that paid for its construction.
