Chimpanzees are closely related to humans, they share 99.4% of the same DNA.
In terms of genetic make-up, modern chimpanzees are humans’ closest relatives, with the two species last sharing “a common ancestor between five and seven million years ago” (LiveScience, 2005).
In terms of intelligence, however, there is emergent research placing dolphins in the running. Indeed some scientists, such as Lori Marino, who published a controversial study on the topic, are so convinced of the advanced nature of dolphin’s intelligence that they believe dolphins should be classified as “non-human persons”.
