Marsupials are known to have the shortest gestation periods, as their young are born prematurely and then finish developing in the mother’s pouch. The shortest of these gestation periods are between 12 and 13 days, and can be found in animals such as: the eastern native cat of Australia, the American opossum, and the yapok, or rare water opossum found in South America.
