What animal eats the most proportionate to its size?

This may sound surprising, but shrews do. The tiny mammal, whose closest relatives are moles, must eat 80-90% of its weight in food daily. Many will starve to death without food for half a day. This extremely high metabolic rate is the highest among animals, making them extremely active – just picture an 800-beats-per-minute heart. In general, smaller animals tend to have higher metabolic rates.
