The Clean Water Protection Act would make it illegal to dump mining waste in to streams, protecting communities of humans and other animals from this huge pollution source. Unfortunately this bill never came to a vote. It is likely that this type of law will be revisited. One thing many cities like Portland, Oregon are doing is building pipes to help manage sewage. In lots of places sewage overflows into rivers when it rains, and these “big pipes” will allow the water to be redirected for treatment.
