What is all that smoke that comes from oil fields?

Many oil fields were set on fire in Saudi Arabia to reduce the effects of solar radiation in the early 1990s.  In 2003, various Iraqi oil fields were burnt and the smoke was the by product of burning oil wells, which could be seen from US satellites.  Additional photos of this can be seen at: http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/library/imint/iraqi-freedom-smoke.htm
