Some have argued that palm oil is a healthy substitute for trans fats, however palm oil is naturally very high in saturated fats. In addition palm oil plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia, which produce 83 percent of the world’s palm oil, have cleared huge tracks of tropical rainforest in order to expand their plantations. Malaysia and Indonesia are home to 21 critically endangered species and 166 threatened species, whose habitat has been greatly reduced by this expansion.
