Based on the use of the term in a recent New York Times article, agro-imperialism is used to describe a recent trend of developers who are rushing to grab remaining unused arable land. Foreign investors, both on behalf of governments and private businesses, are concocting plans to flood development and technology into untapped arable land in Africa, both for global export and to feed populations in the host country. Some countries that are planning to push into Africa are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and South Korea.
