Columns tend to distribute weight equally along their length. This structure combines with the circular cross section to create support that has few compressive weak points. I think it is the same reason why architects use columns to support extremely heavy structures, such as the parthenon in Greece.
Columnar trees also occupy less space than tree with multiple trunks. This means that they can inhabit small spaces and that many trees can grow in less space.
