Activated carbon (also known as activated charcoal) is carbon that has a very large surface area because it is processed to be extremely porous (300-2000 square meters per gram). It is made in special forms including cloths. “Carbon cloth” is used mostly for personnel protection for the military. Because it is so porous, a benefit of activated carbon is that it is extremely breathable and is very light. It is excellent for wicking away moisture.
Activated carbon cloth is a special type of cloth made with fibers of activated carbon. Activated carbon itself is actually a crude form of graphite that has a highly porous surface. In fact, it is the most adsorptive substance known to man. Carbon can become activated through heat or the use of certain chemicals.
