    An abyssal ecosystem is an ecosystem that exists below the euphotic zone (exposed to sufficient sunlight), where there is insufficient light to catalyze photosynthesis. This zone is extremely dark and relatively cold, except for hydrothermal vent ecosystems. Organic material that is used for sustenance is transported from the upper portion of the water column.
